Workshop Descriptions

 

Effective Strategies and Best Practices to Increase the Graduation Rate (Jay Smink)

This presentation will discuss the school dropout issue with information and statistics useful for developing grant proposals and school improvement plans. A description and discussion of the 15 most effective strategies for dropout prevention will be provided with illustrations of model programs in local districts and communities from across the nation. The discussion will emphasize the role of school reform and dropout prevention policies and practices as it impacts economic development in the community or region.

 

The Role of Career Technical Education in Dropout Prevention and Economic Development (Jay Smink and Terry Cash)

This presentation will discuss the school dropout issue with information and statistics illustrating how career technical education is a valuable prevention and intervention strategy for all students and specifically for struggling students. A description of successful career oriented programs and best practices from around the nation will be shared.

 

Critical Risk Factors of Students Likely to Leave School Early and Model Programs That Address These Factors (Terry Cash)

This presentation will discuss the school dropout issue with information and statistics useful for developing school and district early warning systems of potential dropouts. It will focus on research-based risk factors (e.g., individual and family domains) useful for designing prevention and intervention programs in schools or community-based organizations.

 

School Leadership and Community Involvement: The Starting Points for Increasing the Graduation Rate (Jay Smink and Terry Cash)

This seminar will summarize the previous workshop discussions regarding the school dropout issue with key information and vital statistics useful for developing prevention and intervention programs for school districts and communities. The open discussion will illustrate how dropout prevention policies and practices should serve as an economic development tool in the community or region. A discussion regarding the Center’s Program Assessment and Review (PAR) process will be shared with illustrations of how school and community leaders have utilized PAR or other strategic planning tools to increase graduation rates.
